STEPHANIE THOMAS, BSC (HONOURS), LLB.
Stephanie, born in Bristol, England, moved to Edmonton at age 10 in 1968. Attended Meadowlark and Lansdowne Elementary, Vernon Barford Jr. High School, and Harry Ainlay High School, graduating in 1975. During her school years she participated in drama productions, delivered and then managed paper routes for the Edmonton Journal for pocket money. She worked a gap year at the CIBC bank before travelling through Europe.
During her university years, Stephanie worked at the Handicapped Housing Association, interviewing spinal cord injured applicants, among others, for an accessible housing project in the Edmonton Community of Garneau. During law school, she worked at Calgary Legal Guidance, guiding the public to appropriate resources, as well as taking on Court cases pro bono for the public.
Between Degrees, Stephanie worked as a Manager at the Hudson Bay Company both in downtown Edmonton and during the Grand Opening of West Edmonton Mall.
Stephanie obtained a BSC (Honours) from the University of Alberta and an LLB from the University of Calgary. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1988. Stephanie practiced with the Calgary law firms of MacKimmie Matthews and Milne & Company prior to joining the Edmonton branch of Braithwaite Boyle in 1993. In 2020, Stephanie celebrates 32 years of membership in the Law Society of Alberta.
During her tenure, Stephanie has appeared before all levels of Alberta Courts, including the Provincial Courts of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, and the Alberta Court of Appeal. She handles the most serious spinal and brain injury cases. She is an experienced litigator and negotiates with insurance companies and defence counsel and has negotiated thousands of settlements throughout her 32 year career as a civil litigation lawyer.
Stephanie is a current member of the Alberta Law Society and the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association (She is also a Past President of the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association). As Vice-President of Seminars for ACTLA, she coordinated legal education seminars for the ACTLA and joint seminars presented in conjunction with the Canadian Bar Association and the Legal Education Society of Alberta.
Stephanie has past associations with the Canadian Bar Association (Civil Litigation), the Calgary and Edmonton Bar Associations, Calgary Legal Guidance, The Handicapped Housing Association of Alberta, The Association of Professional Home Economists and The Edmonton Epilepsy Association.
Stephanie is a wife to Brent for 36 years, mother to two sons, Justin and David, and grandmother of baby Leo.
Stephanie enjoys travelling and highlights of her travels include Europe, Russia and Africa.
