Ken Braithwaite, LLB.
Ken Braithwaite attended the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, obtaining his law degree in 1976.
He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1977. Ken has practiced with the law firms Bassie Shymko Hladen Sitko & Kantor and has been a partner in the firms of Sitko Braithwaite, Braithwaite Kolthammer & Vigen and Braithwaite Boyle.
Ken is a sustaining member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, a sustaining member of the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association (ACTLA) and former Vice President of ACTLA.
He has been responsible for organizing and chairing various seminars including seminars put on in conjunction with the Legal Education Society of Alberta and is a member of the British Columbia Trial Lawyers Association.
Ken is a director/officer of numerous other companies. He has been practicing civil litigation for 40 years, of which 30 years have been dedicated exclusively to personal injury.
Ken is an avid motorcyclist, and is a member of the Harley Owners Group (HOG).
Joe Boyle, BA, LLB.
Joe attended Concordia University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972. He then continued his education at Western University in London, Ontario, obtaining a Bachelor of Law degree in 1976. He then moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he has practiced law ever since, presently practicing law in the Edmonton office of Braithwaite Boyle.
He was Alberta council for Green Peace for a number of years, and maintains an avid interest in world affairs, travel and sports. Joe has been practicing civil litigation for 40 years, of which 30 years have been dedicated exclusively to personal injury.
Janice Chapman, BA (Distinction), LLB.
Janice obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree (Special) with Distinction in 1983, and her Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Alberta in 1987. She was admitted to the Bar in 1988 and has been practicing personal injury law for 27 years, 24 of those with Braithwaite Boyle. Janice is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, and the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association. She has successfully negotiated and mediated thousands of cases in both the private and judicial context.
Janice is an avid sponsor of the Foster Parents Plan and has been for approximately 20 years. As well, she is a supporter and sponsor of the SPCA.
Janice volunteers her time and is a supporter and fundraiser for the Coachella Valley Horse Rescue located in Indio, California. This is an organization that rescues and rehabilitates abandoned, abused or neglected horses.
Janice has a great love of the outdoors, and some of her favourite times are walking with her beloved dog, Angel in the river valley.
Stephanie Thomas, BSc (Honours), LLB.
Stephanie obtained a BSC (Honours) from the University of Alberta and an LLB from the University of Calgary. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1988. Stephanie practiced with the Calgary law firms of MacKimmie Matthews and Milne & Company prior to joining the Edmonton branch of Braithwaite Boyle in 1993. In 2015, Stephanie attained 28 years of membership in the Law Society of Alberta.
During her tenure, Stephanie has appeared before all levels of Alberta Courts, including the Provincial Courts of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, and the Alberta Court of Appeal. She frequently attends in the Court of Queen’s Bench and handles the most serious spinal and brain injury cases. She is an experienced litigator and negotiates with insurance companies and defence counsel and has negotiated thousands of settlements throughout her 28 year career as a civil litigation lawyer.
Stephanie is a current member of the Alberta Law Society and the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association (she was also a past President of the latter). As a past Vice-President of Seminars, she coordinated legal education seminars for the ACTLA and joint seminars presented in conjunction with the Legal Education Society of Alberta.
Stephanie has past associations with the Canadian Bar Association (Civil Litigation), the Calgary and Edmonton Bar Associations, Calgary Legal Guidance, The Handicapped Housing Association of Alberta, The Association of Professional Home Economists and The Edmonton Epilepsy Association.
Melvin Crowson, BA, LLB.
Melvin attended the University of Alberta where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1989, and his Law Degree in 1993. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1994 after which he articled at Bryan & Company in Edmonton, Alberta. He then moved to Calgary, Alberta where he practiced with Mangat & Company. In 2001 Melvin joined Braithwaite Boyle, and has been practicing Personal Injury law since that time.
Melvin enjoys long weekend runs, reading and traveling.
John B. Stewart, BA, LLB.
John obtained his Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science in 1991 and his Bachelor of Law degree in 1994 from the University of New Brunswick. John was admitted to the Law Society of New Brunswick in 1995 and the Law Society of Alberta in 1999. Following his admission to the New Brunswick Bar, John worked for the law firm of Correia & Collins specializing in Insurance Litigation.
Prior to joining Braithwaite Boyle, John worked for the Calgary law firm of Bascom Fagan, doing primarily Criminal Litigation. He joined Braithwaite Boyle in 2000 and has practiced personal injury law since that time.
Katherine Burt, BA, LLB.
Katherine obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1992, and her Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Alberta in 1996. Katherine completed her articles at Fraser Milner Casgrain, and was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1997. She then practised in the Civil Litigation department at Fraser Milner Casgrain for 9 years. She then practiced in the area of Insurance Defence with Dean Duckett for 3 years prior to joining Braithwaite Boyle in 2009.
Katherine has appeared in several levels of court including Provincial Court, Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Alberta Court of Appeal.
Katherine’s personal interests include travelling and animal rights.
James Dow, BA, LLB.
James graduated from the University of Alberta in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts with Specialization majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. Prior to attending law school, James worked for the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC) and Yellowhead Youth Center as a child care counsellor. He then attended the University of Wales at Cardiff and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1997. James was admitted to the Alberta Bar Association in 1998. He joined Braithwaite Boyle shortly thereafter, and has been practicing Personal Injury Law since that time.
James is an avid cyclist and enjoys cross country skiing and Bikram yoga in his spare time.
Michael Power, BA (Distinction), LLB.
Michael received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with distinction from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1979 and in 1982 obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from Dalhousie Law School in Halifax.
Michael articled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1984. He practiced law in Saskatchewan until he moved to Alberta. He was admitted to the Alberta bar in 2002. He is a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan (currently non-practicing) and a member of the Law Society of Alberta.
Michael is a past president and director of the Canadian Paraplegic Association, Saskatchewan Division and has served as a member and director of a variety of charitable corporations. He practiced law for several years with Bishop & McKenzie LLP in Edmonton and was senior in-house civil litigation counsel with the Edmonton Police Service.
Michael is married to Norma Anne and they have two sons. Michael enjoys photography, music, and traveling.
Colleen Ripka, BA (Distinction), LLB.
Originally from British Columbia, Colleen moved to Edmonton in 1996. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree (with distinction) in Psychology in 1999 and her Bachelor of Laws degree in 2002 from the University of Alberta. During law school, Colleen was continuously involved in providing non-profit legal assistance to low-income Edmontonians through Student Legal Services and ultimately served as a director on the SLS board. Colleen was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2003 after completing her articles. Prior to joining Braithwaite Boyle, she worked as in-house counsel for one of the largest insurance companies in Canada and has inside knowledge of the internal workings of the insurance industry. As a personal injury lawyer, Colleen’s practice involves negotiation and courtroom advocacy to ensure that her clients are fairly compensated for their losses. She finds her work intensely rich and rewarding. Colleen brings significant experience to her personal injury practice and has handled a wide variety of cases including severe brain injury, permanent coma, spinal cord injury, and fatality claims. Colleen has conducted trials before the Court of Queen’s Bench and the Provincial Court of Alberta, worked on matters at all levels of court in Alberta and appeared before numerous quasi-judicial tribunals including the Appeals Commission for the Alberta Workers’ Compensation Board. Colleen recognizes that no amount of financial compensation is enough to make up for certain losses, but it can help ease the burden.
In her free time, Colleen enjoys spending time with her family, reading, travelling, volunteering and fundraising for various organizations including her local community league, her children’s school, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Colleen is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association.
Melina Djulancic, BA, J.D.
Melina attended the University of Calgary, obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2009. She continued her education at the University of Manitoba, obtaining her Juris Doctor degree in 2013. She then returned to Calgary and has been with Braithwaite Boyle ever since.
Melina practices primarily in the area of personal injury, although she has gained a background in many other areas of law through her volunteer work with the Calgary Youth Justice Society and the Winnipeg Legal Help Centre. She has an interest in global affairs and was a part of the Canadian delegation for the 2013 G20 Youth Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Through her work with Mediators Beyond Borders International, Melina also attended an international conference on mediation in Baltimore, MD in 2012. She currently volunteers with the Legal Education Society of Alberta and is also part of the Association of Women Lawyers.
In her free time Melina enjoys traveling, sports, and the arts. She is fluent in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian.
Kailey L. Mack, ba (Distinction), j.d.
Kailey graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree (with Distinction) in Psychology in 2010 and received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alberta in 2014. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2015 after completing her articles in Leduc.
Kailey is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, as well as a member of the Alberta Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer Society’s Advocacy Committee.
In her free time Kailey enjoys yoga, live music, and traveling.
